Few words

MUNICIPALITY OF EASTERN MANI

The capital of the new Municipality is the city of Gythio in which the port is located.

The Municipality of Eastern Mani is a Municipality of the Peloponnese Region that was established with the Kallikratis Program by the merger of the pre-existing Municipalities of Gythio, Smynos, Itilo and Eastern Mani. The capital of the new Municipality is the city of Gythio in which the port is located, the historic capital is Areopolis. The area stars in all historical periods with finds up to 210,000 years old. On the island of Kranai or Marathonisi, which is connected by a jetty with the city of Gythio, according to mythology, Paris and the beautiful Eleni went to rejoice their love when he stole her from King Menelaus of Sparta. The beginning of the national liberation struggle against the Turks is celebrated with brilliance every year on March 17 in Areopolis.

In our Municipality the visitor has the opportunity to tour areas of special natural beauty, to admire great monuments and to get to know the traditional hospitality. It is offered for excursions or vacations, combining a series of nature-loving and archeological routes that together form a great “map” of experiences.
